Call to Action

written 27 Sept 2021

I agree with Representative Liz Cheney on perhaps only one issue. On all other issues, particularly concerning policy issues, I disagree with her. The one issue on which I agree takes precedence at this hour in our history. The Constitution of the United States must be protected from those who would destroy it.

She is “Pro Life,” meaning that she supports restrictions on abortion, but she is not prolife concerning capital punishment. She is very conservative in fiscal matters. She opposed Affordable Care Act and voted to abolish it as well as to restrict its funding. She attacked President Biden for his handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal–though here I tend to agree the withdrawal was mishandled. She is pro-extraction of minerals including petroleum, coal, and uranium. She favors delisting various species from the Endangered Species Act, such as wolves–already accomplished–and grizzly bears. There are numerous other policies on which I would disagree with her.

Yet on that most important issue, she and I agree. The former president of the United States has endangered democracy be his refusal to accede to the results of the November 2020 election. Numerous challenges, some totally legal, have been initiated by Mr. Trump, adjudicated in courts, and found lacking in substance. Other challenges by the former president have been beyond the pale of the law. He requested attorneys general of various states to decertify the results in those states. He has encouraged various state legislatures to pass laws restricting access to the privilege of voting and to remove the final authority over the voting from the constitutionally mandated officers to the legislature itself. Ms. Cheney has denounced Mr. Trump for these actions, for which he has verbally attacked her character and indicated he will support another candidate to seek to unseat her in 2022. On her campaign web site, https://cheneyforwyoming.com, I found the following quote: “I am, and always will be, a conservative who puts the strength of our democracy and Constitutional values ahead of partisan interests.”

Mr. Trump’s actions in continually discrediting the last election, in undermining the credibility of elections generally, and in fomenting violence against the House of Representatives in its meeting on 6 January 2021 are dangerous and disloyal actions against the United States. This is our most serious threat to the United States since the rebellion of the southern states beginning in 1861.

As a result, I’m making a donation to Ms. Cheney’s reelection campaign. I call on all loyal conservative Republicans to do likewise. I call on you to announce your donation to family, friends, and neighbors, and to encourage them to do likewise. I’m calling on all of you to protect the Constitution of the United States.
