In the midst of the furor over the president’s tariffs, Nicolle Wallace had couple of people on her MSNBC program, Deadline: White House, in which one of the guests specifically placed the responsibility of this chaos created by the tariffs upon our “do nothing” Congress. I propose you all write your representatives in the House of Representatives explaining your reasons for being against the tariffs and demanding that they actively participate in writing a bill reclaiming the fiscal right belonging to Congress to set up tariffs, taxes, and other fiscal responsibilities. I specify the House of Representative because that is the branch of Congress which must initiate fiscal legislation.
Representatives from all coalitions across the political spectrum can also correct some of the gross misrepresentations in the tax bill which the House recently passed and sent to the Senate. That bill will cost millions of Americans their health coverage through across the board cuts to Medicare and added restrictions to Medicaid coverage. Such a bill should also address the damage already done to the veterans through cuts to the Veterans Administration and to cuts in Medicaid and Medicare
If enough representatives from conservatives through moderates and including liberal positions join together to write up these bills, they could also force the leadership to allow the bills come to the floor in both branches of Congress. Moreover, these members of Congress could then go to town halls in their districts and field the questions with honesty.
Since Congress is currently asleep, we are the ones responsible to awaken them. Write them; share with them your positions on tax cuts for the wealthy, on cuts to health care, on untrammeled tariffs, etc. You are ultimately the ones responsible.
